Treasury
Celebrates State’s Diversity with New Cajun French and Spanish Website |
Louisiana is a diverse state with a unique mix of cultures and influences. The Treasury Department recognizes this, and to celebrate our state’s rich heritage we have translated our unclaimed property website into Cajun French and Spanish. We now offer searching capabilities in both languages to help more citizens, especially those who may use English as a second language, to claim what is rightfully theirs.
Unclaimed property is lost
or forgotten money that businesses turn over to the state.
It can include savings accounts, refunds, dividends, mineral royalties
and payroll checks. Other examples include checking accounts, cashier checks,
money orders, travelers checks, certificates of deposit, insurance proceeds, and
utility deposits. The average
unclaimed property refund is usually between $200 and $300.
We work hard to make locating these funds as easy as
possible. Many people still think
there are strings attached with the program, but this isn’t the case, it’s a
free service provided by the Treasury.
Since 1996, we have set records for unclaimed property collections for six out of eight years and have set records for unclaimed property refunds for seven out of eight years, but there is still a lot of money left to be claimed. The State Treasury has approximately $243 million in its unclaimed property account, including $33.5 million in new money from businesses this year!
