Treasury Refunds Over $133,000 in Unclaimed Money to New Orleans Residents Treasury Will Continue Efforts to Return Remaining $303 Million to Louisiana Citizens BATON ROUGE, LA – The State Treasury returned its second-highest daily amount of unclaimed property at Lakeside Mall this past Saturday at its Unclaimed Property Awareness Day. Claims totaling over $133,000 were returned to New Orleans area residents, according to State Treasurer John Kennedy. “This event was particularly important to us because we know how much New Orleans residents need this extra money right now. We were thrilled to return such a large amount to them,” said Treasurer Kennedy. “Everyone seemed to have a different story to tell of lost homes and possessions so we hope that this money will help them to continue putting their city and their lives back together.” Over the past 10 years, roughly $102 million has been returned to residents statewide. The Department of the Treasury still has around $303 million in unclaimed money to give back to its rightful owners. Unclaimed property is any intangible personal property that has remained unclaimed by the owner for a certain number of years and may include items such as savings and checking accounts, stocks and dividends, utility deposits, uncashed payroll or cashier checks, or health and accident insurance payments. In the past, amounts refunded to individual people have ranged from $5 to $1 million. One lucky recipient received $25,000 on Saturday. “Our goal is to get this money circulating through our economy as soon as possible and mall events are the easiest way for us to reach thousands of people in just a few hours.
