Unclaimed Property Could Provide Extra Cash This
Christmas
Treasury Staff Will Work
Overtime to Return Unclaimed Money This Holiday Season
BATON ROUGE, LA – Christmas is right around the
corner, and Louisiana residents who need extra cash this holiday season should
check to see if they have unclaimed money listed with the Louisiana Department
of the Treasury, according to State Treasurer John Kennedy.
“Our staff will be working overtime to process
claims this holiday season and will put a rush on anything filed over the next
few weeks,” said Treasurer Kennedy. “We can’t guarantee an exact date when your
check will arrive in the mail, but we pledge to do everything we can to produce
a quick turnaround on your claim.”
The State Treasury is holding more than $330 million
in unclaimed property, which includes money from uncashed payroll checks, old
bank accounts, royalties, utility deposits, interest payments, stock
certificates and life insurance proceeds. Around one in six Louisiana residents
has unclaimed money listed with the state, and the average refund is $200 to
$300.
In order for the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property
Division to return money quickly during the holidays, an individual’s claim must
be complete and accurate. Ownership of a claim must be verified, and an
individual needs a Social Security Card, driver’s license or other form of ID to
claim his or her money.
“The fastest and easiest way for us to process a claim is if we have a Social
Security Number and an address, but other documentation will work as well,” said
Treasurer Kennedy. “The sooner you can log on to our website or dial our
toll-free hotline, the quicker you will receive your money.”
Louisiana residents wanting to search for unclaimed money should visit
www.latreasury.com or call 1-888-925-4127 (toll-free nationwide).
