In response to requests by several states, including Louisiana , the U.S. Treasury Department has made it easier for citizens to find unclaimed federal savings bonds and interest payments. The department has created a “Treasury Hunt” Web link to help the owners of savings bonds and interest payments claim their money.  

According to the U.S. Treasury Department, about 15,000 savings bonds and 25,000 interest payments are returned each year when investors move or change accounts. The department also has information on $9 billion in bonds that are presumed to be abandoned, have matured and are no longer earning interest.
